Groups

Create a parent + child in one click to organize related work.

What are Groups?

  • definition: A fast way to create a parent task and its first child in one action.
  • what you get: Two rows a parent named “New Group” and a child named “New Task”.

How it works

Create a group

  1. Optionally select a task to anchor placement.
  2. Open the toolbar dropdown next to Add task.
  3. Choose Add Group.

Result: a parent “New Group” and child “New Task” are created and inserted.

Placement rules

  • No selection: Appended at the end with levels 0 (parent) and 1 (child).
  • One task selected: Inserted after the selected task and its children, at the selected task’s level (parent) and level+1 (child).
  • Multiple selected: Uses the first selected row; inserts after its subtree.

Insertion follows the selected task’s entire subtree:

Selected (level 0)
  Child A (level 1)
  Child B (level 1)
[Group inserted here]
  Parent: New Group (level 0)
    Child: New Task (level 1)
Next Sibling (level 0)

Names and defaults

  • Parent: “New Group”
  • Child: “New Task”
  • Defaults: 1‑day duration, next business‑day start, finish inferred, 0% complete, Not Started.
  • Owner: If the project has a manager, new rows seed Owner from that manager.

Behavior

  • Parent dates roll up from children; child dates/scheduling behave like regular tasks.
  • You can add more children later using Add Subtask on the parent.
  • Groups can be nested (a group parent can be a child of another group).

Limits and rules

  • You can’t add a group onto a milestone.
  • Child levels are capped; groups create parent at level N and child at N+1 (V4 UI constrains to levels 0–1 for group creation).
  • Structure is fixed for creation: always exactly two new rows.

Tips

  • Use groups for phases, sprints, features, or work streams.
  • Rename immediately to your real labels (e.g., “Phase 1: Planning” / “Requirements”).
  • Keep groups manageable (5–10 children) for readability.

Yes. A group parent can be placed under another parent to create nested structures.

How do I delete a group?

Delete the parent to remove it and any contiguous children, or delete children individually.

Can I convert an existing task into a group?

Add a subtask to an existing task to effectively make it a parent.
