Subtasks
Build hierarchies in Plan Builder. Indent to create children, outdent to lift.
What are subtasks?
- hierarchy: Child tasks nested under a parent to structure work
- roll‑ups: Parents aggregate dates and progress from their children
- flexible links: Subtasks can have predecessors like any task
Levels and limits
- level 0: Top‑level tasks (no parent)
- level 1+: Children at increasing indent levels
- max depth: 6 levels
Creating subtasks
- toolbar: Select a parent → Add dropdown → Subtask (or press
S) - indent: Select a row and press
Tabto make it a child of the previous non‑milestone row - fallbacks:
- No selection: creates a top‑level task
- Selected parent is a milestone: creates a top‑level task (milestones cannot be parents)
- Insert position: placed after all of the parent’s existing children
Indent and outdent
- indent: Moves the row (and its contiguous children) under the previous valid row; new level = min(prev.level + 1, 6)
- outdent: Lifts the row one level; its actual children follow, preserving relative depth
- milestones:
- Cannot become parents; indent uses the previous non‑milestone as parent
- Outdent avoids creating milestone parents; if it would, the outdent is skipped for that row
Scheduling and roll‑ups
- dates: Parents roll up from children earliest child start, latest child finish, duration = business‑day span
- progress: Parents compute percent complete from immediate non‑milestone children
- business hours: Edits normalize to working‑day times; weekends are skipped
- critical path: Subtasks participate in CPM like any task
Tips
- Keep depth to 2–3 levels for readability
- Use parents to represent phases; children for actionable work
- Avoid adding children to milestones use a regular task instead
FAQs
Why can’t I add a subtask to this row?
It’s a milestone. Milestones can’t have children.
Why don’t parent dates match what I typed?
Parents roll up dates from children. Edit child dates to change the parent.
How do I move a subtask to a different parent?
Use Indent/Outdent (Tab/Shift+Tab) or reorder, then re‑indent.
