Multi-Select

Select multiple tasks at once in Plan Builder to run bulk actions with confidence.

What is Multi‑Select?

  • select many: Choose multiple rows at once from the selection column or ID column
  • clear feedback: Selected rows show a blue background with a left blue border
  • bulk actions: Run operations (indent/outdent, link, duplicate, delete, add subtasks) on all selected

Why use Multi‑Select?

  • speed: Perform common edits across many tasks in a single step
  • consistency: Apply the same structure (indent/outdent) or relationships (link) uniformly
  • control: Review what’s selected via clear row highlights and the selection count in the toolbar

How selection works

Methods

  • Click checkboxes: Click the checkbox in the first column to toggle a row in/out of the selection.
  • Marquee (drag) selection: Start a drag in the selection column or the ID column to select all rows the box intersects.
    • Hold Ctrl/Cmd before dragging to add to the current selection.
    • Dragging is ignored when starting on interactive elements (inputs, buttons, etc.).
  • Select all visible: Click the header checkbox to select or clear all rows currently visible (respects filters).

Notes:

  • Shift‑click range is not supported. Use marquee selection for ranges.
  • Clicking on the empty background (not on a row) clears the current selection.
  • Right‑clicking an unselected row will select it first, then open the context menu.

Visual feedback

  • Row styling: Selected rows are highlighted with a subtle blue background and a blue left border.
  • Toolbar count: The toolbar shows the number of selected rows and includes Clear Selection.

Plan Builder specifics

  • Header checkbox: Selects/clears all rows currently shown in the table (after search/filters). It does not select hidden or unloaded rows.
  • Hierarchy: You can select parent and child rows together. Selection applies to visible rows only; collapsed children aren’t selected.
  • Calendar: The Calendar view is read‑only and does not support row selection.

Bulk actions

  • Indent / Outdent:
    • Keyboard: press Tab to indent, Shift+Tab to outdent the selection.
    • Also available from the context menu.
  • Link tasks:
    • Links selected tasks in their current display order (top → bottom): first → second → third, etc.
    • Creates a simple chain using predecessors.
  • Duplicate: Creates copies of all selected rows.
  • Delete: Removes all selected rows (and their visible descendants when applicable).
  • Add subtask(s):
    • Adds one subtask under each selected non‑milestone row.
    • Subtasks are limited to a single nesting level.
  • Insert N tasks above/below:
    • When a selection exists, the context menu shows actions to insert that many tasks relative to a target row.

Tips & troubleshooting

  • If drag selection doesn’t start, begin the drag from the selection column or the ID column, not in the middle of a data cell.
  • If select‑all doesn’t catch some tasks, check if filters are active; select‑all applies only to currently visible rows.
  • Linking follows the grid’s display order, not the order in which you clicked rows.
  • Calendar view is read‑only: make selections and edits in the Plan grid.
